WHEREAS: Dumas, located in the heart of the Arkansas Delta, was incorporated in 1904 after a planter, merchant, and surveyor of French descent, William Dumas, bought acres of farmland;
WHEREAS: Known for its thriving cotton industry, the city quickly became a business and agricultural hub due to its presence along the rapidly expanding Missouri Pacific Valley Line Railroad;
WHEREAS: Today, on the outskirts of town lies the Desha County Museum, where visitors are introduced to the day-to-day life of a southern Arkansas farming family;
WHEREAS: Dumas is also home to the Delta Technology Education Center, a workforce training school offering classes on a variety of subjects like medicine, agriculture, and business;
WHEREAS: In 2011, the movie Mud starring Reese Witherspoon and Matthew McConaughey was filmed in and around the community;
WHEREAS: Governor Sanders’ “Capital for a Day” program highlights great cities around Arkansas like Dumas and brings senior state government officials into town to meet with their local counterparts; and
WHEREAS: Dumas will serve as the sixteenth “Capital for a Day” under Governor Sanders and will momentarily serve as Arkansas’ seat of government.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, SARAH HUCKABEE SANDERS, Governor of the State of Arkansas, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the laws of the State of Arkansas, do hereby name Dumas, Arkansas, our Capital for a Day on August 19th, 2025, and invite our senior state government officials to join me in a visit to the city.
